How a shower is built

The work behind the tile, step by step. This is the part you can't see once the shower is finished.

  1. Open the walls

The old tile and wall materials come out down to the studs, so we can see what is really behind them.

  2. Rough-in plumbing

Valve and drain plumbing is set and measured before anything closes up.

  3. Cement board and mortar bed

Cement backer board goes up, and the shower floor is built from mortar sloped toward the drain.

  4. Waterproofing

A waterproof membrane covers the walls, niche and floor, including every seam and corner.

  5. Tile and finish

Tile goes on over the membrane, then grout, trim and fixtures finish the job.

Most shower builds run 2–3 weeks once work begins.
