Tile is not waterproof

Tile and grout are beautiful and durable, but they are not waterproof. Water passes through grout lines every time the shower runs. What protects your walls, your floor and the ceiling below is the waterproofing layer hidden behind the tile.

That is why we say a tile shower is a waterproofing project wearing a remodeling costume. Do the layer behind the tile right and the shower lasts. Skip it or rush it and the damage is out of sight until it is expensive.

What we waterproof

01

Shower pans & floors

A sloped pan sealed and tied into the drain, then flood-tested before tile.

02

Walls & corners

Seams, corners and transitions — the places water finds first — sealed on purpose.

03

Curbs & benches

The shapes with the most surface and the most risk, built and sealed as one system.

04

Niches & shelves

Recessed storage waterproofed on every face, not just the back.

05

Valve & plumbing penetrations

Every pipe and valve that passes through the wall sealed before tile.

06

Failed showers

If an existing shower is leaking, we assess it and tell you what it needs.

How we waterproof a shower

  1. Build a surface that is ready

Framing, backer and the sloped floor are set correctly first.

  2. Seal every layer and detail

Membrane goes over the pan, walls, curb, bench, niche and around every penetration.

  3. Test before tile

The pan is flood-tested. If it does not hold, we fix it before tile hides it.

  4. Tile over a sealed shower

Tile is set last, over a shower that is already waterproof.

Both sheet membranes and liquid-applied membranes are proven ways to waterproof a shower. The right system depends on the shower, and we choose it for yours. What matters is that the whole shower is sealed as one system, not patched in pieces.

While we’re in there

The shower is sealed before any tile goes on, and that is the moment to look at what is around it. The same crew can replace the vanity, toilet and supply lines, repair a soft subfloor, take out old cabinets or floors, and lay new flooring, so no outside companies are needed. Tell Pine what you have been putting off and he will go over what makes sense to do together.

Questions, answered honestly

Is grout waterproof?

No. Grout and tile slow water down but do not stop it. The waterproofing layer behind the tile is what keeps the wall dry.

How do I know if my shower is leaking?

Common signs: a musty smell, a stained ceiling or wall below or beside the shower, soft or spongy spots, grout that keeps cracking, or tile that loosens. If you see any of them, call us before the damage grows.

Can an old shower be re-waterproofed without removing the tile?

Almost never. The waterproofing lives behind the tile, so fixing a failed shower usually means opening it up. We tell you honestly what yours needs.

What is the difference between sheet and liquid membranes?

Both work when installed as a complete system. Sheet membranes are applied in sealed panels; liquid membranes are rolled or troweled on. We choose the system that suits your shower and layout.

Do you test the waterproofing?

Yes. The pan is flood-tested before tile goes on.
