Why the drain decides whether the shower works

A shower floor is a shallow slope that has to carry every drop to one small opening and keep the water out of everything else. The drain is where that slope ends and where the waterproofing has to tie in, which makes it the most important single detail in the room.

A tub drain and a shower drain are not the same assembly, and the old location often has to move for a new layout to work. That is the work we do: set the drain, build the sloped pan to it, tie the waterproofing into it and test before any tile goes down.

What we install and fix

01

Center drains

The classic point drain, set at the low point of a floor that slopes to it on every side.

02

Linear drains

A long, slim channel drain along the wall or the entry, for large-format tile and a clean look.

03

Drain relocation

Moving the drain for a bigger shower, a new layout or a tub-to-shower conversion.

04

Curbless entries

A floor that flows into the bathroom, with the drain and slope planned into the structure.

05

Drain replacement

Replacing a failing or leaking shower drain and rebuilding the pan around the new one.

06

Slow or smelly drains

We look at the whole path — drain, trap and line — and tell you what is going on.

How a drain job goes

  1. See what is under the floor

Slab, crawlspace or basement decides how the drain can move. We check it first.

  2. Set the drain and build the slope

The pan is built to slope toward the drain on every side, with the right drain for your tile.

  3. Seal and test

The waterproofing is tied into the drain, then the pan is flood-tested before any tile is set.

  4. Tile and finish

Tile is set to the slope, the drain cover goes on, and the shower is run and checked.

On a concrete slab, moving a drain means cutting the concrete. That is straightforward, real work, and part of the plan from day one. A fully curbless entry needs depth below the finished floor for the drain and the sloped pan, so we evaluate your specific floor in person before promising it.

While we’re in there

With the floor open for the drain, it is the easiest time to repair a soft subfloor, swap the vanity and toilet, renew worn supply lines or lay new flooring. The same crew waterproofs and tiles the shower, so nobody else has to be brought in. Tell Pine what you have been putting off.

Questions, answered honestly

What is better, a linear drain or a center drain?

Both work well when the floor is built for them. Linear drains suit large-format tile and curbless entries; center drains are simple and classic. We help you choose for your layout and tile.

Can you move my shower drain?

Often yes. On a slab it means cutting concrete; with a crawlspace or basement it is easier. We tell you what your house allows before any work begins.

Can you do a curbless shower on a slab?

Often, with careful planning. When a fully curbless build is not practical, a low-profile curb delivers nearly the same look and accessibility.

Do you test the shower pan?

Yes. The pan is flood-tested before tile goes on, because a floor that does not hold and drain perfectly is a failure.
