An XL porcelain slab turns a shower wall into one calm, continuous surface. Instead of hundreds of small tiles and grout lines, a few large panels of stone-look porcelain run from floor to ceiling, and the veining flows across them the way it does in a single piece of natural stone. Alpine Development Groups LLC designs and builds XL porcelain slab showers and large-format porcelain tile showers for homeowners in Mableton, Austell and across Metro Atlanta.

What Is an XL Porcelain Slab?
Porcelain is a manufactured stone: natural clays and minerals pressed and fired at very high temperature into dense, hard panels with very low water absorption. XL porcelain slabs are the largest version of it, made in panels several feet wide and many feet tall. You will also hear them called large-format porcelain slabs, porcelain panels or sintered stone. They come in marble-look, onyx-look, travertine-look and solid colors, with veining that runs from soft and quiet to bold and dramatic: black with gold, white with gray, deep blue with white lightning.
Butterfly Book-Match Porcelain
Book-matching is what makes a slab wall look like it was quarried for your room. Two neighboring slabs, or one slab opened along its center, are set so the veining mirrors across the seam, like the pages of an open book. A butterfly book-match goes one step further: the pattern mirrors left and right down the middle of the wall, and the veins meet at the center in a symmetrical, wing-like shape. When the side walls carry the same pattern around the corners, the whole shower reads as one unified piece of stone.
Book-matching takes planning. We lay out the slabs before anything is cut, decide where the center seam falls, and place the niche so the veining flows through it instead of stopping at its edge.
XL Slab Walls vs. Large-Format Porcelain Tile
Large-format porcelain tile, such as 12 by 24 and 24 by 48 inch pieces, is the practical middle ground. You get far fewer grout lines than standard tile and a clean, modern wall at a more approachable scale. XL slabs go further: fewer joints, larger uninterrupted veining and a floor-to-ceiling look that standard tile cannot give you. Which one is right depends on your room, your layout and the feeling you want when you walk in.
- Large-format porcelain tile. 12 by 24 and 24 by 48 inch tile in stacked, brick or vertical layouts. Fewer grout lines, wide color range, a calm modern look.
- XL porcelain slab walls. The back wall and side walls in book-matched slabs, with veining that carries around the corners.
- XL feature panel. One book-matched slab, centered on the back wall from floor to ceiling, with quieter large-format tile on the walls beside it. One bold gesture, everything else calm.
- XL slab shower floor. On a mud-bed base, the slab can continue onto the floor in a few sloped pieces so the veining carries through. A small mosaic floor is still a great choice because small pieces follow the slope and add grip. We will tell you which suits your shower.
The Details That Make a Slab Shower
- Niches. Cut into the slab so the veining continues through the opening, at any position on the wall.
- Metal finishes. Brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, brushed gold, matte black or chrome. One finish carries the valve, showerheads, drain, shelves and trim, and stone and metal are chosen together.
- Picture frame. A thin metal frame on the back wall, in the same finish, with a second color or the slab itself inside it.
- Glass and bench. Frameless glass keeps the stone in full view, and a bench or ledge can be clad in the same slab.
What Goes Behind the Slab
A slab wall only looks as good as the wall under it. Every shower we build gets a complete waterproofing system, flat and plumb backing, sealed seams and corners and a properly sloped pan. Read how we approach it on our shower waterproofing page, or see our custom tile and walk-in shower page for the full process.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an XL porcelain slab?
An XL porcelain slab is a very large panel of porcelain, a manufactured stone made from natural clays and minerals fired at very high temperature. Slabs are several feet wide and many feet tall, so a shower wall can be covered with a few pieces instead of hundreds of tiles.
What does butterfly book-match mean?
Book-matching mirrors a slab’s veining across a center seam, like an open book. A butterfly book-match mirrors the pattern left and right down the middle of the wall so the veins meet in a symmetrical, wing-like shape.
Is porcelain real stone?
Porcelain is a manufactured stone. It is made from natural materials and fired into a dense, hard panel, and it can be made to look like marble, onyx, travertine and other stones with veining that natural stone is known for.
Can a niche sit inside a book-matched wall?
Yes. The niche is cut from the same slab so the veining flows into it, and we plan its position before the slab is cut.
Can the shower floor be a slab too?
On a mud-bed base, yes. The slab is cut in a few sloped pieces so it follows the drain and the veining carries from the wall onto the floor. Small mosaic remains a popular choice for grip, and you can compare both in the Shower Builder.
How long does an XL slab shower take, and what does it cost?
Most shower builds run 2–3 weeks once work begins. Pine handles all pricing personally at the consultation — he’ll take great care of you. Every project starts with a free in-home quote.
