What we like and what to know

What we like

  • Fewer joints than 3x6 and a calmer wall
  • Looks long and clean laid vertically
  • The Builder groups it with 3x6 as a small-format subway option

What to know

  • Long tiles need a flat wall so edges line up, which is why we prepare the substrate carefully
  • Brick offset should be one-third or one-half, not mixed

How we set 4x12 Subway

We use a one-half or one-third offset to limit lippage on long tiles, check the wall for flatness before tile goes up, and back-butter when needed so the edges sit flush.

Plan it before you decide

The Shower Builder lets you choose the tile size, the layout, the grout, the metal finish and the niche, and shows a 3D model as you go. Pine handles all pricing personally at the consultation — he’ll take great care of you.

4x12 Subway questions

Is 4x12 considered large-format?

Not quite. Large-format starts around 15 inches on a side. 4x12 sits in the long subway family.

Can 4x12 go vertical in a shower?

Yes, and it makes ceilings feel taller. We plan the cuts at the top and bottom so they fall in the least visible place.
