6x6 Tile: Layouts, Uses and Shower Ideas

6x6 is a mid-size square with a handmade, craftsman feel. It is large enough to read as tile, small enough to keep the grout lines lively.

What we like and what to know

What we like

  • Four pieces per square foot is easy to lay and easy to clean
  • Works on walls and on dry floors
  • Looks good in matte, glossy and handmade-style finishes

What to know

  • Too large to follow a shower pan slope, so use a smaller tile in the shower floor
  • Visible grid in every direction

How we set 6x6

6x6 is set with a medium-bed mortar, with the pattern started from the center line so the cut tiles at the corners match in size.

Plan it before you decide

The Shower Builder lets you choose the tile size, the layout, the grout, the metal finish and the niche, and shows a 3D model as you go. Pine handles all pricing personally at the consultation — he’ll take great care of you.

6x6 questions

Can I use 6x6 on a shower floor?

Not on a sloped pan. We use a small mosaic there and keep 6x6 for walls and dry floors.

Is 6x6 a good size for a small bathroom?

Yes. The scale is human and the joint lines stay pleasant in a tight room.
